From ashley at svionline.org Tue Apr 8 11:23:39 2008 From: ashley at svionline.org (ashley ironwood) Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2008 10:23:39 -0500 Subject: [Sviannouncements] tour, david rovics shows and pot luck dinner Message-ID: David Rovics - Songs of Social Significance We're in for a special treat this Saturday, April 12, when progressive singer-songwriter David Rovics will be our guest. He'll do 2 shows that day... an afternoon concert for kids of all ages, and an evening performance aimed at adults. David is a political folkie in the vein of Pete Seeger, Phil Ochs, Billy Bragg, and Patrick Street. He'll wake you up and challenge you to confront the inequalities and injustices you may have been ignoring lately. David has been called the musical voice of the progressive movement in the US. Amy Goodman has called him "the musical version of Democracy Now!" Since the mid-90's Rovics has spent most of his time on the road, playing hundreds of shows every year throughout North America, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Japan. He and his songs have been featured on national radio programs in the US, Canada, Britain, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and elsewhere. He has shared the stage regularly with leading intellectuals (Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn), activists (Medea Benjamin, Ralph Nader), politicians (Dennis Kucinich, George Galloway), musicians (Billy Bragg, the Indigo Girls), and celebrities (Martin Sheen, Susan Sarandon). He has performed at dozens of massive rallies throughout North America and Europe and at thousands of conferences, college campuses and folk clubs throughout the world. Schedule for April 12th: (Central Standard Time is 1 hour earlier than Eastern Standard time) * 1:00 pm CST: Tour of SVI and Moonshadow * 3:00 pm CST: David Rovics all-ages show * 5:00 pm CST: pot luck dinner * 7:00 pm CST: David Rovics performance We're asking $5/person or $10-20 per family (sliding scale) for the day. If you want to spend the night, it'll be an additional $5 per person - bring a tent and camping gear. No pets, please. We love your pet animals, too... however they will likely cause problems with our domesticated animals. You may wish to join David and others on April 13, as they protest the Y-12 nuclear weapons facility in Oak Ridge, TN. More information can be found and transportation arranged during the day at SVI. Message-ID: Greetings, friends of Sequatchie Valley Institute at Moonshadow! I am writing to let you all know that we have about 10 (out of 30) spaces left for our two weekend workshops, "Earth Alive! Sustainability and the Sacred." If you are interested in either weekend, please let me know as soon as possible as I am working hard to fill them. We have scholarship money, work trade and food trade available - don't let the financial aspect of this workshop keep you from contacting me - if you're interested in what's being offered, we can work it out. The facilitators for this workshop are quite talented and all of our attendees since our first workshop together in 2002 have come away from the workshop feeling rejuvenated and motivated. Our website has a link to their bios and organization, Sacred Earth Network. The first weekend goes from friday evening through sunday afternoon. The second weekend goes from thursday evening through sunday afternoon. Anyone can join either weekend, you do not have to have experience with this kind of work. You will find the registration form here: http://svionline.org/events/139/earth-alive-sustainability-and-the-sacred-may-2-4/ Please pass on the word Thank you so much.
