SVI Board Meeting
Board Members: Gilbert Everett, Jeannie Hacker Cerulean, Chris
Gilligan, Jake Lewis, Bradley Jones, Alex Fear, Terri Ballinger,
Trish King
Staff: Asha (Ashley) Ironwood, Patrick Ironwood
Visitors: Aurelia Crum, Josh Claunch, Stephanie Dyer
Minutes of the prior board meeting were read and approved.
Ashley announced she has begun the transition to her new chosen name,
Asha... and encouraged all to begin using her new name.
Action: Chris to call Denny Haldeman and Barry Wilde about their
intentions re: SVI Board membership.
Action: Chris to call Sandy Kurtz re: possibility of insurance rider
for events vs. full SVI event insurance, and to discuss alternatives.
Cerulean discussed the Parents Nature Workshop 12/14 at Urban Century
Institute. She said it will be a discussion, facilitated by Serena
Inks (naturalist, homeschool science teacher), with parents regarding
engaging children in nature... they will do muffin making and sand
art as activities. Jeannie also said UCI is seeking a head
naturalist, and they would like to have naturalists suggest ways to
increase biodiversity at the Institute.
Cerulean recounted information about the Beehive Collective
fundraiser and shows. She said SVI raised $500 for the Bees during
the benefit show at JJ's Bohemia, and that there were 75 attendees at
the Cress Gallery show and 60 at the Greenspaces show. The Bees also
distributed their materials, posters, patches, shirts, etc. at the
shows and took in more donations. Cerulean said an important takeaway
from the shows was an understanding of how the Bees work locally to
build community in their hometown, and take on larger projects that
connect them to regional, national and global issues.
Action: Asha to talk with Bill Pfeiffer re: possibility for Earth
Alive 2009.
2009 moonshadow events:
Wildflower Hike - early April
Lunch and a Log Shiitake workshop - late April
Food for Life
Bonnaroo - June
Earth Alive (possible pending discussion with Bill)
Building Workshop
The Board and Staff will need to look at windows of time for Natural
Building workshops. Patrick suggested possibilities: Ulinawi home,
structural improvements at the Land, sauna at moonshadow. Patrick
relayed that he is excited about working at moonshadow next season,
and anticipates a good internship, staff and social scene.
Asha said her friend Jefff Rogers is practiced in Open Space meeting
facilitation, and has offered to facilitate a 2-day workshop and
visioning process for the SVI Board, advisors, staff, crew and other
interested folks. Asha feels it would help make a fresh start and get
folks energized for changes and renewal.
The Board agreed to set the Open Space workshop for January 30 -
February 1 2009, and make it the first Board meeting of 2009.
Cerulean said that time is during Fire Feast and would be a great
time to swap seeds with other regional communities... possibly
sending "care packages" of seeds.
Board transitions:
Jeannie discussed several folks moving from the Board to the Advisory
Board, including herself and Gilbert, Jon Cable, Caara Fritz-Stoney
and Trish. Other members said several folks are interested in
possibly joining the board, including Kelley McCauley, Trey Henson,
Stephanie Dyer, Jeff Rogers and Emily Marr-Davis. Jeannie and Trish
plan to move to the advisory board.
Jake said he will consider the chair position. Members said the chair
is mainly involved in communication to rally the troops for meetings,
events, work days, etc.
Aurelia was nominated to the board and was accepted by unanimous
consensus.
Stephanie was nominated to be a board member. She said she would join
the advisory board and think about a full Board membership. Board
accepted Stephanie to the advisory board by consensus.
Committes and staff roles will be discussed at the 1st 2009 meeting.
Grants:
Ashley has a categorized list of grant resources, and would share it
with anyone who is interested in writing or pursuing a grant. Patrick
said Patagonia will likely give funding for Food for Life.
Meeting was adjourned.
