We haven't needed an accountant since 2009-ish, when we closed the books on the Conference Center project.

IRS previously required detailed books on .orgs with $25K+ receipts. Now the threshold is $50K+ receipts… After the books closed on the conference center project, which had funding in excess of the threshold, and had several employees on payroll, there was no real need for an accountant to deal with the books.

The tax returns on a .org with <$50K receipts has been reduced to an "e-postcard" -- so simple a monkey with internet connection (like Chris Gilligan) could do it. You can both thank and curse congre$$ and the $upr3me cour+ for this… the same rules that allow us to fly under the radar because we make so little money, also allow the bigwig corporate .orgs to spend $billion$ to influence the election$ of tho$e who legi$late on our behalf.

>> Pat, you should talk to an accountant about what it means (and takes) to set up a chapter organization. It is a bit more paperwork and it takes a lot of effort from all sides. It helps if the child chapter has it's own accountant that can speak financialeze to the parent .org's accountant.

If the child .org is .organized, and has it's own accountant, and if the parent .org is .organized and has its own accountant who knows their sh!t, then it works well. If it's dis.organized, it's a magnet for irs.gov, and it all falls to p!ece$.
